Yao Wei was born in 1984 in Shanghai, China. She received her training at the Shanghai Dance School between 1993 and 2000 and continued at the Shanghai Drama College from where she graduated in 2002. She was assigned to the Corps de Ballet at the Royal Danish Theatre in 2002 and promoted to soloist in 2005. In 2008 Yao Wei was promoted to Principal Ballerina of the Royal Danish Ballet.

Repertoire includes:
Odette/Odile in Swan Lake, Kitri in Don Quixote, Eleonora in The Kermesse in Bruges, the Mermaid in The Little Mermaid, Elisa in Le Conservatoire, Selim in Abdallah, and roles in Napoli, Etudes, Manon, Vers un Pays Sage, Digital Secrets, The Odyssey and La Sylphide. Furthermore title roles in Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty, La Bayadere and Paquita.

Awards and honours:
The Hope Prix at the Lausanne International Ballet Competition in 2000
1st Prize at the National Ballet Competition of China
The Grand Prix at the Helsinki International Ballet Competition in 2001
